Port Moody Modern Craftsman
Many people put off home renovations for fear of losing their home’s character. However, with the right contractor, you can update and modernize your home without sacrificing character, and that’s exactly what this couple did for their Port Moody craftsman renovation.
Maintaining Rustic Craftsman Charm
Our homeowners were thrilled that we were able to keep and enhance the warm rustic theme of their home.
In the kitchen, we fully replaced the cabinetry to increase functionality and modernity. The cherry wood cabinets with a red stain amplifies the craftsman style and at the owner’s request, they were sourced from locally-made plywood due to health concerns from off-gassing. We also used formaldehyde-free adhesives during the construction.
The countertops in this Port Moody renovation were replaced with dark brown-toned quartz countertops and provide plenty of room for food prep. We removed the dated hexagonal kitchen island and replaced it with a modern square one with a peppercorn stain for the base.
We were able to maintain the existing slate flooring and it works well to preserve the rustic theme of the kitchen. The slate flooring works well to tie in all the elements of the kitchen design.
To complement the darker cabinets on the kitchen island, we installed a new built-in hutch for the homeowners just outside the kitchen. They now have a beautiful, dedicated space to store their china and glassware.
Increasing Kitchen Functionality
In addition to the aesthetic modernization of the home, we also made renovations to increase functionality for the homeowners.
The homeowners are taller with mobility issues, so we added thicker quartz countertops for the island to increase the counter height.
We also maximized the use of kitchen drawers so the wife no longer has to lean over to access cabinets.
We installed cooking appliances that were more ergonomic for the homeowners’ mobility issues.
Storage is a key component of any kitchen and in this project we were able to extend the cabinetry all the way to the top of the 10ft ceiling, creating additional storage to display family heirlooms. Because we increased the storage area, we were able to remove an awkward framed-in closet, making way for a more useful built-in microwave and wall-oven.
